ClockIn+ App

From High-Volume Logging to Secure Identity Authentication

Executive summary

Company: Job&Talent

I spearheaded the evolution of a Hardware Clocking System (ClockIn+ App). What began as a solution to handle massive workforce throughput (Phase 1) evolved into a secure, camera-integrated platform (Phase 2). This evolution required balancing extreme operational speed with strict IT security protocols (MDM) across the US and European markets.

Phase 1: Scaling Operations via Physical-Digital Integration

1. The Challenge & Context

As Senior Product Designer, I led the UX for a dedicated Hardware Clocking system to replace high-friction mobile/manual time-tracking in high-traffic industrial environments (e.g., Expeditors, UPS Mail Innovations).

  • The Problem: Manual logs and personal mobile tracking caused data inaccuracies, payroll errors, and shift-change delays.
  • The Goal: Build a frictionless, robust hardware-software solution to ensure 100% data reliability and accountability.
  • The Constraint: The interface needed to be highly visual to eliminate linguistic barriers for a diverse, multi-lingual global workforce.

2. Strategic Architecture & Results

Design went beyond the screen to focus on service orchestration, optimizing for speed as the primary KPI to maximize facility throughput across US and Spain (ES) markets.

Using Looker and Amplitude analytics, we validated the system’s performance during peak shift changes:

  • High Throughput: Processed peaks of 800+ clock-ins per hour.
  • Strong Adoption: Scaled to 4,700+ daily interactions at high-density sites (e.g., Bright International US).
  • Enterprise Stability: Maintained a consistent 6% global hardware clocking rate, serving as the «gold standard» for enterprise data reliability.

Phase 2: Solving for Trust & Identity Verification

1. The Challenge & Compliance Pivot

Following the successful hardware rollout, we needed to eliminate «buddy punching» (fraudulent clock-ins) in high-security warehouses without slowing down operations.

  • The Constraint: Biometric recognition was ruled out due to strict, fragmented US state privacy laws. Additionally, all devices were locked down via Mobile Device Management (MDM) protocols.
  • The Pivot: Co-designed a legally compliant Photo-Verification Model. The system captures a quick photo at shift start/end for manager cross-referencing, with an automated 30-day hard deletion policy to comply with legal frameworks.

2. Impact & Validation

By leveraging native camera APIs within MDM constraints, we successfully layered security onto the existing high-speed workflow.

  • Zero Performance Degradation: Maintained the peak throughput of 800+ clock-ins per hour, even with the added verification step.
  • High-Volume Success: Adopted rapidly at major US sites like BJs Wholesale and Expeditors, managing 1,500+ daily secure interactions per site.
  • Secure Scaling: Protected the 6% of global enterprise users relying on hardware clocking with a secure, legally compliant, and stable experience.
